Handfasting
A Handfasting is typically a promise of commitment for a "year and a day". After that time the couple decides whether they want to recommit with another handfasting, get married or have an "untying" ritual.
Some couples, however, choose to use a handfasting as a more formal expression of their commitment, in lieu of fulfilling legal requirements required by a wedding.
Some couples choose to add a marriage license and make their handfasting a legal marriage.
